Is My Pelvic Floor Broken?

The pelvic floor is intimately (pun intended) related to the muscles in the back and hips, and when dysfunction is present, effects can be felt or experienced anywhere from the abdomen to the feet. Pelvic floor muscle dysfunction can be due to weakness or overactivity (or both), and the course of treatment will depend on your individual needs. Your pelvic floor is not broken.  It may just need some support, and we are here for you.

Pelvic Floor Muscle dysfunction can be due to:

  • Chronic constipation
  • Vaginal childbirth and excess weight gain during pregnancy
  • Lifting weights or objects without proper breathing techniques
  • Obesity or recent weight gain
  • Hormone changes due to perimenopause or menopause
  • Nerve damage
  • Interstitial Cystitis (aka Painful Bladder Syndrome)
  • Pelvic surgery
  • Aging
  • High impact activities such as running
  • Weak OR overactive pelvic floor muscles

Any of these issues could be causing symptoms such as leaking urine or feces, pelvic organ prolapse, pelvic pain, low back pain, or pain with intercourse, and it is important to see a trained pelvic PT to address the dysfunction and work toward healing. Treatment from a pelvic PT may involve retraining or down training overactive muscles, strengthening weak muscles, visceral mobilization, behavioral modifications, dietary changes, lifestyle changes, breathing techniques, and pressure management. Taking an active role in your recovery by attending all appointments, being dedicated your home exercise program, and making necessary behavioral changes will give you the best outcomes. Don’t put yourself on the back burner anymore! You deserve to feel better. Call The Healing Collective today to set up your free 15 min consult with Dr. Madelyn today.🌟
