Melatonin, Vit C and Covid-19
In an article we reviewed, researchers are currently looking into Melatonin and Vitamin C as a supplement combination that may be very helpful for people with symptoms.
The basic premise is that there is a statistically far lower chance of morbidity in pregnant mothers and younger children than the rest of the population. Looking at a graph of melatonin production throughout the lifespan shows the distribution:

The hypothesis that is being tested is that melatonin, in combination with Vitamin C, may have a protective effect. The mechanisms are described in detail in the paper. There are dosage suggestions listed at the bottom of the article, and we advise you to consult with your medical provider, especially if you have Diabetes (there are special precautions, like only taking melatonin only after 3 pm among others), and particularly if you have heart disease and are taking ACE inhibitors, which are resulting in increased morbidity/mortality in those who contract Covid-19.
The bottom line: If your healthcare provider is not familiar with this information, send him/her a copy of the article and ask for their recommendation. If you are still having trouble getting good advice on supplements and medication interactions, contact our office and we would be happy to talk with you about scheduling a telemedicine appointment with one of our Functional Medicine providers, who can guide your supplement and medication decisions.
We wish you the very best during this time of transition and evolving information about how we best can support our global community. Let us know if we can be of assistance to you.
If you are looking for a high-quality source for supplements, click to be taken to our The Healing Collective supplement portal.
Take good care of yourself during this time. Be well.
