DEFINING COHERENCE

Having high coherence means that your physiological systems - both your parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems - become highly ordered and enhance your nervous systems' function, which impacts all systems in the body.


Other ways to describe coherence include

  • Cardiac Coherence

  • Resonance

  • Resonant Frequency

  • Heart Coherence

  • Physiological Coherence

  • A frequency of around 0.1 Hz (10-second cycles or 0.1 cycles/second)

  • 5-7 breaths per minute

When you are in a coherent heart wave pattern, you are facilitating optimal brain function, enhancing performance at home, at work, in sports, or in whatever you are doing, whereas an incoherent heart wave pattern impairs performance and cognition.


The technology we use to measure Heart Rate Variability shows us a graphical measurement of heart rate variability. When you breathe in, your heart rate naturally increases. When you breathe out, your heart rate naturally slows. This is normal, and it is called Normal Sinus Arrhythmia. Heart Rate Variability that is coherent is well-organized, rhythmic, smooth and sinusoidal (rather than jagged).
