Blending the best from allopathic medicine & functional medicine to support your body, mind, and spirit.

About Tracy Shulsinger, FNP- Bio and Philosophy:

Tracy Shulsinger knew from childhood that her life work was in healing and healthcare. After many childhood dreams of various healthcare roles, she landed on nursing, initially as a Registered Nurse, and now as a Family Nurse Practitioner, and has never looked back.

Tracy is a Integrative Family Nurse Practitioner, bringing together Functional Medicine, Allopathic/Western medicine, Energy Medicine & Shamanic Healing. She received her Bachelorette of Science In Nursing as a Registered Nurse (RN) from George Mason University in Fairfax, VA in 2004. Tracy began practicing energy medicine and shamanic healing in 2006.  She earned her Masters of Science in Nursing as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) from the University of Colorado in 2011, with a concentration on Urban Underserved.  She began a certification in functional medicine with the Institute for Functional Medicine in 2014, and has been happily practicing functional medicine since then.

Tracy’s healthcare working experience as an RN includes cardiac care, urban underserved primary care, orthopedics medical/surgical, behavioral health (psychiatric care), women’s health, home health, and camp (pediatrics) nursing. Tracy has also enjoyed several medical missions to Central America and has developed Spanish language fluency.

As a FNP she has worked in urban underserved Primary Care with all ages of men and women, including pregnancy care, women’s health, pediatrics, psychiatric, acute and chronic care, home health; and in Functional Medicine.

In addition to providing medical care, Tracy also practices shamanic healing, Eden Energy Medicine, teaches shamanic journeying and shamanic healing trainings and hosts regular shamanic journeying and practice gatherings.

Tracy believes that the body has infinite wellness and healing potential and her role is to partner with and support the body’s ability to heal itself. Throughout her education and experience, Tracy’s long-term vision has been to integrate allopathic medicine with alternative healing modalities in a Functional Medicine model. Tracy truly loves her role as a Integrative Nurse Practitioner and brings an abundance of passion, joy, and enthusiasm to the individuals with whom she works.

What is Functional Medicine:

“Functional Medicine addresses the underlying causes of disease, using a systems-oriented approach and engaging both patient and practitioner in a therapeutic partnership. It is an evolution in the practice of medicine that better addresses the healthcare needs of the 21st century. By shifting the traditional disease-centered focus of medical practice to a more patient-centered approach, Functional Medicine addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms. Functional Medicine practitioners spend time with their patients, listening to their histories and looking at the interactions among genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that can influence long-term health and complex, chronic disease. In this way, Functional Medicine supports the unique expression of health and vitality for each individual.”

Why choose’s functional medicine?

Functional medicine is the most effective and healing focused way of practicing medicine that I have experienced. It is particularly designed to maintain wellness, prevent disease, and diagnose and treat chronic, mysterious conditions that may be unresolved after various attempts at diagnosis and treatment. Functional medicine heals such long-standing conditions because it supports detecting, treating and healing the root causes of illness; and healing and wellness from the inside out. The functional medicine approach connects the dots, recognizes the patterns, asks extensive questions from birth to present, and involves deep listening for the truth of what has caused imbalance in the system, and then uses excellent diagnostic and treatment tools for restoring balance and harmony. The goal of treatment is healing- and this has many forms. For some clients, this means a cure, while for others it means an improvement.  Patients often seek functional medicine when they have tried the traditional western medicine and self- treatment care, without achieving desired outcomes. We then put on our detective hats together and begin discovering what we can eliminate or reintroduce to support the body’s natural healing abilities. This can include nutrition and dietary changes, relaxation/stress management, physical activity, diagnostic testing (blood, urine, saliva, and/or stool; imaging studies), high quality prescription grade supplements, and prescription medications if necessary. It is also inherent in the foundation of functional medicine to individualize care and form heart-centered relationships with patients, in a partnership. This way of practicing medicine has always felt right and important to me, and I am grateful to have found a way to practice medicine that is so healing, effective, safe, and feels good for both parties involved- practitioner and client!

Is functional medicine right for you?

Functional medicine is very involved- it’s lifestyle medicine. This means that the patient and practitioner are both making efforts to improve the patients condition and health. Patients are often recommended to make dietary/nutrition changes, practice relaxation techniques, begin or alter their physical movement activities, complete diagnostic testing, begin treatment with supplements (or medication if indicated), and to follow-up with appointments to re-evaulate labs and progress over time. The best results come from the most active, engaged and involved patients!  If you are ready for such a care partnership with a medical provider, and are ready to make personal changes, this can be a great fit!  If you are not ready or willing to make such changes, functional medicine will not be as effective for you. Prescribing medication and supplements can only go so far- the full lifestyle changes that involve dedication and commitment produces the best results for the immediacy and future of your health.
